You need to think about shopping and what to put on your baby registry in a completely different way. We need to think about more gender-neutral baby items!
Why?!
Because gender-neutral items have a more useful life! It is both cost savings and less waste.
When you have your first baby and likely get blessed with lots of gifts at your baby shower you should make the most of it by getting as much gender neutral as possible!
Then you can use most of the items for your next child and any other subsequent children.
And beyond that, gender-neutral items are easily passed down to a baby cousin or friend if there is any life left in the baby gear.
Let’s dive right into a list of items that could and in my opinion should be gender-neutral!
- Burp Cloths
- Receiving Blankets
- Sheets
- Swaddles
- Basic Toys
- Large Seats/ Bouncer
- Swing
- Car Seat/Stroller
- Medical Items (Nail Clippers)
- Bibs
- Pacifier Clips
- Booster Seat
- Plates, Bowls, Silverware
- Bottles
- Bath Towels
- Washcloths
- Some Clothing
Items that can be gender specific
- Cups
- Pacifiers
- Clothing
Cups
Cups could get gross, and need replaced by the next kid. Or they could last a long time, but your next child will need fresh ones. Having different colors can be helpful here in identifying who the cups belong to.
Example the pink cup is your daughter’s, and the blue is your son’s, rather than having an orange and yellow cup.
Pacifiers
The reason I say pacifiers can be gender specific is that they are likely not going to make it to your next child. You will lose them, or they will be worn enough that they should be replaced. This will depend on the exact type and style of pacifiers. Some are quite clean and well-designed, while others have the potential to grow mold.
I did not use this type, but it is the Itzy Ritzy silicone pacifier. They seem like a style that would be clean and have a long life. You can click the link to check them out on Amazon. Itzy Ritzy
If you can think of any other items that will quickly get worn through or worn out, those could be gender specific.
Clothing
You are of course going to want some gender-specific clothing! I don’t see anything wrong with that, but do still consider getting some that are gender neutral.
Think about newborn clothing especially! They grow out of it so quickly that it barely gets used. If you can get some sleepers that are solid colors like olive green, gray, tan…colors like that then you can again get more use out of them.
When my first daughter was a toddler once or twice I got her black tennis shoes that would probably be considered boy shoes. But I thought they looked sharp and could work for a boy later if needed.
Twins
Now I do want to say if you have twins, you may need gender specific to help you keep track of what goes with who. I get it with twins and the need to keep track of stuff. That would be a huge exception.
If you do have twin check out this YouTube video where I reviewed a Twin baby registry on Amazon.
Conclusion
Those are my quick thoughts and tips on trying to lean more gender-neutral with baby items and purchases. Now if you don’t agree and have an unlimited budget go for it. Get all the pink and blue your heart desires!
But if you maybe are on a tighter budget and need to be thriftier, I hope this helps.
