When you are expecting a baby, you register for all these baby items. You could literally get hundreds. Take a look at what I used in 24 hours with a two-year-old. Only 2 short years later, check out the number of items that you may have registered for that I am still using and also the ones that are nowhere to be seen!

Basically, what I am saying is you may need some newborn items, but I honestly recommend you put more thought into the long-term items.

If you are ready, we are going to take a walk through my day with my 2-year-old. When I touch a new baby item for the first time it will be bold and connected to an affiliate link if you are interested in purchasing or viewing the item.

Morning Wake Up

Typically, in the morning, I will take a peek at my little one on our VAVA Baby Monitor. Once they are up and ready to start the day, I will get on my phone to change their Hatch Light green before entering their room.

Once in their room, I approach them at their crib which includes the crib, mattress, mattress protector, fitted sheet, rail cover, and they recently have started using a small receiving blanket to sleep with. They also still use a pacifier.

Next, we do an outfit and diaper change which takes place on a quilt we have on the guest bed in the baby’s room.

Jammies are coming off as well as the diapers we use at night Huggies. Obviously, wipes are involved as well. And now we move on to the fresh daytime diaper, LUVs, and a new outfit. The diapers and wipes are stored in a diaper caddy on the quilt.

Breakfast Time

Our next main event is breakfast time.

Some items that are used include a plate, fork, 360 Cup, a Silicone Bib, and our booster seat

We decided to go the booster seat route instead of using a free-standing highchair. We have been very happy with this choice.

Playtime

After breakfast, they get their hands wiped and get down for some playtime. Now I am cleaning up the kitchen. I am not exactly watching every toy they touch, but a few of our common and favorite toys during this period of life include:

Baby Doll

Play Stroller

10 Stacking Cups

Shape Puzzle

Outing for the Day

Our next task is heading out the door to run to the grocery store.

My two-year-old needs their shoes on and we are heading out the door. Once they get in the car, they are of course seated in their car seat which sits on a seat protector. They also have a mirror set up so I can see them while driving.

They keep a pacifier in their cupholder with a pacifier clip on it to help it not get lost in the car.

In the car, I also keep a stocked diaper bag. I did not need any of the items in it on this trip, but it is always in the car.

Pro-Tip: Over time your systems will change. When I first had little ones the diaper bag was frequently used. It has now become a backup bag.  I carry a backpack-style purse that holds a few diapers and wipes. If we need to pack food, we bring a lunchbox.

This way the diaper bag typically goes unused. It does house more diapers, wipes, and of course extra outfits, along with a few other items. I only take it in the house when it needs a good restock, otherwise, it is always in my car which we use as the family car.

We get back home and unload the groceries. We have more play time and eat lunch. Overall, the same items are used. Maybe a few different toys, but our focus is on baby gear, rather than toys so I am not going to go crazy linking every toy we own.

Nap and Dinner

Next is nap time. Again, we use all the same sleep items, followed by more play time and dinner.

At dinner we add the use of a spoon and bowl to the mix, but overall same general items.

Bath Time

After dinner, we have bath time. The items we use at bath time include a bath kneeler, toy boats, body wash/shampoo, washcloth, and hooded towel.

I think the bath kneeler is a majorly overlooked baby item. This is one you will use frequently and for many years. Do your knees a favor and get some version of this item.

Right after the bath we are drying off and using the hairbrush.

Pro-Tip:

If you want to get a hooded towel, get the largest you can find. Do not get the tiny 30 x30 inch towel. They will outgrow it sooo fast! Shoot for toddler towels, not baby towels.

Also wanted to link to this other bath kneeler that seems very nice. We did not use this one, but it looks a little better than ours.

Bedtime

Then we repeat a lot of the same bedtime items from the morning wake-up routine.

In the evening, we add a vitamin, our little baby Bible, and a prayer book.

We have a very simple and straightforward bedtime routine that we can knock out in about 15 minutes on average.

Conclusion

There you have it. A day in the life with a 2-year-old and the baby gear we come in contact with.

This is your reminder to purchase items that have a long life and not worry so much about newborn-specific items. Put your money into daily-use items.

Focus on the key points of any day:

  • Sleep
  • Meals
  • Play
  • Travel/Transportation

Let’s make the most of our purchases.
