Life as a mom is always busy. It can often feel like we don’t have enough time, but where we spend our time is a choice.

It is a choice to exercise, make food from scratch, or watch Netflix. Where do you want to spend your time?

If you are ready to dive into YouTube let’s talk about how I find time in my day as a busy mom to make it happen!

My Schedule: Finding Time in the Chaos

As a mom your schedule is constantly changing with the flow and season of life. Maybe you are working or at home. Perhaps you are pregnant, have a newborn, or your toddler is dropping their nap. YIKES!

Throughout my various seasons, I have used 3 main times to do about 90% of my YouTube work.

  • Early Mornings
  • Nap Times
  • Late Evenings

Early Morning

My #1 task during early mornings is editing YouTube videos. It gives me time to focus and get the video ready to be published. I can do other tasks, but editing is a large chunk of my time.

I typically get up any time between 5:30 and 6:30. I don’t even set an alarm anymore. I attempt to not disturb my husband and get up quietly.

Nap Time

My #1 priority during nap time is to film. Now do I film everyday Monday through Friday? NO!

I would say I film one or two days a week.

The other days I spend nap time editing or working on various tasks like titles, outlines for filming, concepts, and thumbnails.

I have written another article about taking back nap time! You can’t get everything done while your baby/child/children are sleeping. You have to find a way to accomplish tasks while they are awake.

Evenings

In the evening, I do not always work. Sometimes I am just present with my husband chilling after the kids are in bed. Other times I get out my laptop while we are watching TV. Now I typically work at a desk with multiple monitors. Some tasks are much easier with the large screen space. Other tasks aren’t too bad on a small laptop. I try to save the easy single-screen tasks for the evenings.

I view the evening as bonus work time. It is not a priority. I do not expect to be deeply focused or productive.

Kids are Around

Like I said before I get about 90% of my YouTube work done while my children aren’t present.

For the other 10%, I would say I sneak YouTube in when they are around. This might mean jumping on the computer while they are playing well or simply writing down future video ideas and titles on pen and paper.

Another task I do around them on occasion is record B-Roll. I recently did a video that included meals I made for dinner. My kids were in the kitchen while I recorded clips. I just made sure to keep them out of the frame, which was pretty easy because most of the filming was closeups of the food on the stove. I then mute the B-Roll when I add it to my videos.

Planning and Preparing for Success

The main thing I do to get my YouTube time is be productive while my children are awake. Nap time is sacred. During the awake times of day, I am doing laundry, dishes, scheduling appointments, and so much more. I clean up the lunch mess and dishes before getting to nap time.

On filming days, I will even do my hair and makeup while my kids are awake. And finally, right before nap time, I will set up my little filming area. This way right when nap time starts, I can get right to it working or filming.

You only have so much time to work with that you have to make it count.

Batching and Task Focus

I am a firm believer in batching. Just take filming videos. It is so much easier to film 2 or 3 videos while you are looking nice and have the filming area ready to go. I am also in the mode of recording.

I work on a lot of tasks in batches. Content ideas, titles, filming, and editing. It just works better for me to stay on a single task for a bit.

Pro-Tip:

Be Careful with batching filming at first. You don’t film 4 videos then at the end realize you had a huge shadow across your face or that your audio wasn’t working. After your first video take a moment to check the quality before continuing. Batching can also stunt growth if you aren’t doing anything to improve.

Conclusion

That is how I get it done. I maximize the moments I have without children by getting as much of my mom and wifely responsibilities done while they are awake. Find the times that you can work. I don’t exactly love waking up so early, but it is a sacrifice I am willing to make. You have to decide how and where you will find your time.
